Displayed is a 1959 Pittsburgh Pirates team ball with the signatures of Hall of Famers Roberto Clemente and Bill Mazeroski, plus 15 others. Clemente played his entire MLB career with Pittsburgh, achieving exactly 3,000 hits before his tragic death in a plane crash on Dec. 31, 1972, when he was on a flight to deliver supplies to victims of a Nicaraguan earthquake. Mazeroski is famous for his wonderful skill at turning a double-play from second base, and for the walk-off homer the next year at Forbes Field to win the World Series against the New York Yankees. The Wilson baseball is stamped "Baseball Hall of Fame Cooperstown New York," but the foregoing stamping is now very faint. Signing on the sweet spot is Harvey Haddix, who pitched a perfect game against the Milwaukee Braves into the 13th inning on May 26, 1959. Haddix signed and inscribed the ball "Harvey Haddix May 26, 1959." Clemente signed the ball on a side panel, as did Mazeroski. Others signing the ball: Dick Groat, Bill Virdon, Dick Schofield, Roman Mejias, Rocky Nelson, Bob Skinner, Dick Stuart, Harry Bright, Ted Kluszewski, and more. The autographs were signed in black India ink. In the next season, 1960, essentially the same players would win the World Series, beating the New York Yankees in seven games. A protective player of a shellac-like substance has been applied to the baseball, and the ball exhibits some darkening and some spotting. The ball comes with a PSA LOA for the signatures.
