Displayed is a framed photograph of Mickey Mantle and Eddie Mathews that is signed by both of the Hall of Fame sluggers. Because of the youthful appearance of both players, it appears that the photograph was taken at some time in the 1950s, possibly around the World Series in 1957 or 1958. Both the these fall classics were between Mantle's New York Yankees and Mathews' Milwaukee Braves, and each went to seven games, with the Braves winning in '57 and the Yankees taking the '58 Series. Mantle and Mathews were contemporaries. Mantle played from 1951-68, all with the Yankees, and Mathews played from1952-68, on the Boston Braves (1952), the Milwaukee Braves (1953-65), the Atlanta Braves (1966), the Houston Astros (1967), and the Detroit Tigers (1967-68). Mathews was a lefty hitting third baseman who was the only player to play for the Braves in Boston, Milwaukee, and Atlanta. Mathews batted .271 lifetime, with 512 home runs. Mathews was a 2-time NL home run champ, a 12-time All-Star and a 2-time World Series Champion. Mantle was with the New York Yankees for his entire Major League career. The center fielder hit 536 homers, more than any other switch-hitter in MLB history. Mantle was a 20-time All-Star, a 3-time AL MVP, and a 7-time World Series winner. Mantle and Mathews were frequently compared in strength. Warren Spahn, a Hall of Fame pitcher for the Boston and Milwaukee Braves, said: "Mathews is just as strong as Mantle. They don't hit the same - Mantle gets all of his weight into his swing; Mathews uses his wrists more." The 16x20" black and white photo has been matted and framed to 22.5x26".
