Displayed is a 1973 Thurman Munson New York Yankees payroll check signed by his wife Diane Munson. The Bankers Trust Company (New York, NY) check is made out to "Thurman Munson" in the amount of $1,617.18. The check measures 3.5x7.5", and it is stamped with the facsimile signatures of the 1973 Yankee general manager, Gabriel (Gabe) Paul, and front office executive Eugene McHale. Thurman had an outstanding year in 1973, with 20 homers and a .301 batting average. Munson was a 7-time All-Star, 3-time Gold Glove winner, 1970 AL Rookie of the Year, and 2-time World Champion who played his entire Major League career with the Yankees (1969-79). Munson batted a lifetime .292, with 113 home runs. He passed away on August 2, 1979, when the Cessna Citation plane he was piloting crashed when he was practicing touch-and-go landings at the Akron-Canton Airport near Canton, Ohio. Diane signed the back for herself and for Thurman using blue ink from a ballpoint pen.
