The race was the Santa Anita Handicap run on February 23, 1935, at Santa Anita Park. The race was won by Azucar with the "Iceman," George Woolf, aboard. Champion racehorses Equipoise and Twenty Grand also competed but were also-rans. Equipoise was ridden by "Sonny" Workman. Other jockeys of note who participated were future Triple Crown winners: C. Kurtsinger (War Admiral 1937), W. Saunders (Omaha 1935), and Eddie Arcaro (Whirlaway, 1941, & Citation, 1948). In addition to the extremely rare and important program for this historic day are three original betting tickets, the first two of which were wagers on the feature. 1). $2 place ticket on number 1, the entry of Equipoise and High Glee, the latter ridden by Robertson. 2) $2 show wager on # 12 Rickalus with another famous jockey in the irons, Jack Westrope. 3). A $2 show wager on number 4 in the 8th race on Crystal Prince, a handicap. This number, in addition to Azucar's, were both circled in the program. The only writing is that a single horse program number is circled in pencil in each race. The original staples are there but the front and back covers have separated. There is no damage to where the staples became detached. There is no rust noted and no stains or tears to this museum quality program.
