Presented is a group of seven (7) 3.5x5.5" cards that were replies to invitations sent to Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris inviting them to attend various Oldtimers' Day games at Shea Stadium from 1975-1980. Hall of Famer Mantle, in response to his Old Timers' Day invitations, has printed his name, as the Mets requested, on each of the four cards he returned to the Mets. Thus, instead of the familiar, neat, cursive Mantle signature, Mickey has neatly hand printed his name. 1) June 28, 1975: Mantle used a blue ballpoint to hand print as he filled out his name, address, and phone number, and he indicated that he would not be attending. He also used a blue ballpoint to print "Sorry/Previous engagement/OKC Stars and Stripes Show." 2) July 16, 1977: Mantle used a fine-tipped black marker to hand print his name and city/state address (he printed Dal. Texas). In pencil, an unknown hand filled out Mantle's street address and zip code. Mantle put an "x" in a box to indicate that he would attend the Old Timers' Day. 3) Mantle used a blue ballpoint pen to hand print his name and address, and the "x" on the card indicates that he will attend the game. 4) Mantle used a pen to hand print his name and city/state address (Dal. Texas) and the "will not attend" box on the card has a handwritten "x" to indicate that Mantle does not plan to attend. Three of the cards were filled out by Roger Maris, the former New York Yankee right fielder who broke Babe Ruth's single-season home run record when Maris hit 61 round trippers in 1961. 5) July 17, 1976. Maris, using cursive writing, signed his name and then hand printed his address and phone number in blue ballpoint pen. He indicated that he would not attend. 6) July 16, 1977. Maris filled in his name, address and phone number, hand printing all of it with a fine-tip black marker, indicating he would not attend. 7) July 17, 1976. Using a blue ballpoint pen, Maris used cursive writing to both sign his name and hand print his address and phone number. He checked the box that indicated he will not attend the Old Timers' Day. The returned cards from Mantle and Maris provide an interesting behind the scenes look at their lives in baseball playing retirement, with Old Timers' Days becoming a large part of their post-career celebrity. The white cards exhibit some fading with the passage of more than four decades, but the cards are in otherwise excellent condition. Each response has been PSA authenticated and encapsulated.
