"At the crack of the bat he'd (center fielder Tris Speaker) be off with his back to the infield, and he'd turn and glance over his shoulder at the last minute and catch the ball so easy it looked like nothing at all, nothing at all," said Hall of Fame pitcher Smoky Joe Wood about his teammate and friend, fellow Hall of Famer Tris Speaker. Presented is a 1919 Type I George Bain 4x6" photo of Speaker. Known as "The Gray Eagle," Speaker played his entire career in the American League (1902-27), mostly with the Boston Red Sox (1907-15) and the Cleveland Indians (1916-26). He was famous for playing an extremely close in center field, and he led the AL 8-times in assists and 7-times in putouts. Speaker hit a lifetime .345, and he still holds the MLB record for career doubles, with 792. Speaker was the AL MVP in 1912 with the Red Sox, and he led the AL that year in homers (10) and doubles (52). In 1916, Speaker his .386 to win the AL batting championship, with Cleveland. He was a 3-time World Champion, the third time as a playing manager with the Cleveland Indians. The Speaker photo has been framed to 9x11". A 0.75x2.75" plaque on the front of the frame reads, "Tris Speaker 1919." In that '19 campaign, Speaker was a player manager with the Cleveland Indians, and the team finished at 84-55, in second place, and Speaker hit .296. The photo shows some of the expected darkening because of its age of over a century. Otherwise, the photo is in excellent condition, and it comes with a PSA/DNA LOA.
