Lewis Alcindor is the birth name of Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer Kareem-Abdul-Jabbar, and the magnificent 7'2" center publicly used the name "Lew Alcindor" until 1971, when he was in the NBA, although he privately changed his name to Kareem-Abdul-Jabbar in 1968. Displayed is a cut Lew Alcindor vintage signature. At UCLA, Alcindor anchored the Bruins' squads from 1966-67 through 1968-69, as UCLA won three straight NCAA National Championships. Alcindor, as an UCLA freshman, was not on the varsity because of an NCAA rule at that time that prohibited freshmen on varsity teams, but when he was eligible to play on the varsity, he won three consecutive National Player of the Year Awards. Alcindor's teams at UCLA had an overall record of 88-2 in his three years of competition, and he is the only player to ever be named the Most Outstanding Player in the NCAA Final Four for three consecutive years. In the NBA, playing for most of his career as "Kareem Abdul-Jabbar," he was a 6-time NBA Champion, a 6-time NBA MVP, a 2-time NBA Finals MVP, a 19-time All-Star, and an 11-time NBA All Defensive Team selectee. With 38,387 career NBA points, Abdul-Jabbar is second to LeBron James in all-time scoring. Alcindor has signed his name to a 1.5x3.6" cut on paper, from a bio clip from a yearbook, or program. On the reverse of the Alcindor cut signature is an ungraded cut signature from his teammate at UCLA, Lynn Shackelford. The bio on the Alcindor cut reads, "Stuffing comes easy for a man his size. What distinguishes Lew is his speed and agility, though he is a shade over 7'1" and 230. His teams have lost just one game in four seasons." Alcindor signed his name as "Lew Alcindor," using blue ink from a ballpoint pen. The large, neatly written cut signature has been encapsulated and PSA/DNA certified as "Auto Grade Only NM-MT 8." Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has not signed his birth name, Lew Alcindor, since he changed it in the 1970s, and probably never will again, so his signature as "Lew Alcindor" is a valued, vintage item.
