Presented is a Sept. 2, 1966, Pittsburgh Pirates ticket stub, PSA Pop 1 of 2, HIGHEST GRADED, from the game at Pittsburgh's Forbes Field in which Roberto Clemente hit a 3-run homer to achieve his 2,000th career hit. With the Pirates leading the Chicago Cubs 1-0 in the bottom of the 5th inning, Clemente came to bat to face right-hander Ferguson Jenkins with Pirates' pitcher Bob Veale on third base and Matty Alou on second. Clemente hit a 1-0 pitch from Ferguson for a homer deep to right field, putting the Pirates ahead 4-0. It was a dramatic way for Roberto to reach the 2,000-hit plateau. Veale eventually got the win in a 7-3 Pirates victory, and Cubs' Hall of Famer Ferguson Jenkins took the loss. The Clemente home run was the 137th of his career. Clemente would also get his 3,000th hit in dramatic fashion, but only in retrospect, as Roberto got his 3,000th hit on his final at bat of the season, but not in the Pirates' final game of the 1972 season. On Sept. 30, 1972, the Pirates were hosting the New York Mets and Clemente got his 3,000th hit in the bottom of the 4th inning on a double to left field off the Mets' starter, Jon Matlack. Later that inning, Clemente scored on a single by Manny Sanguillen. When Clemente was due up in the 5th inning, fellow Hall of Famer Bill Mazeroski pinch hit for Roberto because Clemente had achieved his 3,000th hit, and Pittsburgh, after finishing in first place in the NL East, was resting him for the rest of the game and the final three meaningless games so that Clemente would be fresh for the playoffs. The Pirates lost the NL Championship Series that year, 3-2 in games to the Cincinnati Reds. After the season, Clemente tragically died in a plane crash on Dec. 31st while he was on a rescue mission to take supplies to victims of a Nicaraguan earthquake. The ticket stub, measuring 1.25x2.4", has been encapsulated and PSA graded GOOD 2, Pop 1 of 2, HIGHEST GRADED.
