A truly special and valuable piece symbolizing a defining event in 19th century America. Following the California Gold Rush of 1849, $50 gold slugs, A.K.A. “ingots”, or “Californians”, like this one, were introduced as a way to purify the gold coin market. Gold dust dealers could no longer pass debased gold coins as currency, as its contents were required to be readable on the coin itself. From 1851-1853, these octagonal ingots, 2.5 ounces of gold, were the principal accepted currency in California (along with larger denominations of gold slugs). The edges on front of slug are stamped, “AUGUSTUS HUMBERT UNITED STATES ASSAYER OF GOLD CALIFORNIA 1852”. A wonderfully unique and highly recognizable piece. Rest of front is bald eagle surrounded by words “United States of America 887 Thous Fifty Dolls”. Reverse is target (fully intact) measuring 16mm, 22 circles surrounded by elaborate net design. Americana design on border. In very fine condition, free of the typical edge bumps and nicks. Only slight tarnishing, if any at all. “Go west, my young man” and own a piece of American history. Scarce.
