Original glass plate negative capturing Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig on the field with three of their New York Yankees teammates during the duo's famous "Bustin' Babes and Larrupin' Lou's" postseason barnstorming tour. In what was most likely a publicity shot, all five players are pictured sucking on a lollipop, making for one of the most unusual shots we have seen from the tour. The two Yankees players standing between Ruth and Gehrig, left to right, appear to be Mark Koenig and Earle Combs. The third Yankees player to the far right is difficult to identify, but might be Tony Lazzeri. The "Bustin' Babes and Larrupin' Lou’s" barnstorming tour, which traversed the country in both 1927 and 1928, was one of the most successful postseason tours in baseball history, as thousands flocked to the ballpark at each venue to see the two greatest sluggers in the game. Ruth and Gehrig were the only two players on the tour who traveled. Each of their respective teams was rostered with local talent, which only added to the “grassroots” spirit of the tour. The fact that three New York Yankees players are pictured here indicates that it was probably from the first game of the tour, which started in New York and worked its way west, ending in California.
