Presented is a highly unusual offering: a 1913 New York Giants' season pass in the form of a working penknife. In the '13 season, the Giants, managed by Hall of Famer John McGraw, won the National League pennant for the third consecutive year. Ace Hall of Fame right-hander Christy Mathewson went 25-11 and led the National League in ERA at 2.06. Pitchers Rube Marquard and Jeff Tesseau each won over 20 games and catcher Chief Meyers had the highest Giants batting average, at .312. The Giants lost the World Series to the Philadelphia Athletics 4-1 in games. The metal knife measures 0.5x3.1", and it has a workable fold-out blade. One side of the knife is engraved "N 309 Mr. E B Talcott." On the other side of the knife, in mostly raised letters and numerals, is "POLO GROUNDS THRILLS FOR YOU"/Not transferable/John T. Brush, Pres." The manufacturer's stamp, in very small letters on the base of the blade, reads "A. Kastor & Bros. Germany." After Bill Veeck's famous "Disco Demolition Night" on July 12, 1979, when thousands of disco records were thrown onto the field at Comiskey Park, in Chicago, and after a pre-arranged explosion of the collected records, thousands of spectators rushed the field and rioted, causing extensive damage to the playing area. Thus, it's safe to say that in view of frequent uncivil public behavior in the country, the days of baseball clubs using a knife as an admission pass are long gone. Thus, this season pass/penknife from 110 years ago makes an item of near unique memorabilia.
