1940 New York World's Fair Academy of Sport certificate signed by Babe Ruth in black fountain pen. Ruth's signature has been boldly scripted, however, it is lightly affected by a few tiny water stains. As a result, it technically grades 7/10, but, as one can plainly see, it presents at a much higher level and is closer to 10/10 in its overall appearance. These large New York World's Fair Academy of Sport certificates were issued to students who attended more than one sports clinic at the Fair and are therefore far scarcer than the more commonly seen laurel cards (issued for attending a daily clinic for one sport). The offered certificate was issued to "James Vogel" and features his name printed in red lettering at the top. In addition to Ruth's signature as the "Instructor in Baseball," the certificate has also been signed in black ink by Christy Walsh (6/10), as "Director of Sports" and Ed Widseth (4/10) as "Instructor in Football." The Academy of Sport was the brainchild of Christy Walsh, who was Ruth's agent and head of one of the largest sports-writing syndicates at the time. Ed Widseth was a former All-American at the University of Minnesota and a member of the New York Giants football team in 1940. The certificate (8.5x7.75"; visible dimensions), which includes its original ribbon seal, displays several tears, creases, and water stains. In apparent Good condition. It has been matted and framed together with a large second-generation photo (10.5x13.5") of Babe Ruth. Total dimensions: 27.5x20.5". Full LOA from JSA.
