Presented is a scarce ticket stub to "The Sunshine Showdown," the January 22, 1973, World Heavyweight Championship fight in Kingston, Jamaica, between the undisputed, reigning Heavyweight Champion, Joe Frazier, and challenger George Foreman, a fight won by Foreman on a second round TKO. Both future Hall of Famers came into the fight undefeated: Frazier at 27-0, with 25 knockouts, and Foreman at 37-0, with 34 knockouts. Frazier had taken the vacant WBA and WBC Heavyweight Titles (stripped from Muhammad Ali for Ali's failure to submit to induction into the U.S. Army) in 1970, as Frazier defeated Jimmy Ellis. Frazier defended his title ten times, most memorably against Muhammad Ali in "The Rumble in the Jungle" in Zaire in 1974. That victory over Ali gave Frazier the Ring Magazine Heavyweight Title as the linear champion, and it unified the World Heavyweight Title. The Frazier-Foreman Sunshine Showdown was held at Kingston's National Stadium. Before the fight, the 5'11" Frazier weighed in at 214 lbs., and the 6'4" Foreman weighed in at 217.5 lbs. In the opening round, Foreman was the aggressor, twice knocking Frazier to the canvas with right uppercuts, and then sending the Champion to the canvas a third time with a combination just before the opening round ended. The fight ended at only 1:35 into the second round as Foreman scored a TKO. In that second round, the relentless Foreman again knocked Frazier down, this time with an overhand right. It's reported that Foreman then yelled to Frazier's trainer, Yancey Durham, that if he didn't stop the fight soon that he [Foreman] was going to "kill" Frazier. Finally, after a total of six knockdowns of Frazier, referee Arthur Mercante Sr. stopped the one-sided fight, giving Foreman a TKO and the undisputed World Heavyweight Championship.
