"The Big Train" was his nickname, given to Hall of Fame right-hander Walter Johnson by famed sportswriter Grantland Rice, in the days when a speeding train was the fastest thing on earth. Offered is a 1913, Type I Brown Brothers original photograph of Walter Johnson, who appears to be following through after releasing a throw while warming up in an unknown ballpark. Johnson stood 6'1" with unusually long arms, so long that his right arm gave a whiplike action to his blazing fastball. Johnson seemed born to be a pitcher. "From the first time I held a ball, it settled in the palm of my right hand as though it belonged there and, when I threw it, ball, hand and wrist, and arm and shoulder and back seemed to all work together," said Johnson. He spent his entire Major League career with the Washington Senators (1907-27), and he won 417 games (second in history, behind only Cy Young's 511 wins), and lost 279, with a lifetime 2.17 ERA. The black and white photo measures 5x6.25". On the back of the photo are a number of Brown Brothers stamped notices, along with a file sticker.
