Presented is an attractive vintage Japanese "Tokyo Giants" kimono, probably from the 1960s, the era of Sadaharu Oh. No manufacturer, brand name or team name is on a tag on the kimono, and it is unknown whether the kimono was sold by the Yomiuri Giants. The Giants franchise started in 1934 when the team was called the "Great Japan baseball Club." In 1936, the franchise changed its name to Tokyo Giants, and then in 1947, the team officially became the Yomiuri Giants, even though they are often referred to as the Tokyo Giants. Playing in Japan's Central League, the team has won an amazing 22 Japan Series Championships (Japan's equivalent to the World Series). The team's most famous star, Sadaharu Oh, played with the Yomiuri Giants from 1959-1980, and he hit 868 home runs, more than anyone in professional baseball history. The Tokyo/Yomiuri Giants are Japan's equivalent to America's New York Yankees. Nearly 50% of Japanese baseball fans root for the Giants, and at the same time, many of the remaining Japanese fans loath the club. The imaginatively designed kimono is decorated with many images of a baseball supported by three baseball bats. The team nickname of "Giants" is a recurring image word on the kimono. The kimono has no size tag. It measures 35" from top to bottom. It is 18" from side seam to side seam, 36" around in total. The half sleeves are each 12" in length. The kimono is in very nice condition and shows no hints of its likely age of approximately 60 years.
