Exceedingly rare broadside heralding the appearance of Jackie Robinson and Daisy E. Bates at the "50th Anniversary Dinner" of the Bayonne Chapter of the N. A. A. C. P. held at the Industrial Y.M.C.A, on June 14, 1959. This is the only example of this broadside we have ever seen and represents an early Jackie Robinson broadside relating to the civil rights movement. Jackie Robinson was a prominent civil rights activist following his career and he shared the dais on this evening with another important civil rights figure. Daisy E. Bates was a native of Arkansas, where she and her husband founded one of the only African American newspapers in the United States dedicated solely to the civil rights movement. Robinson and Bates were well acquainted at the time, as both he and Bates participated in the Youth March for Integrated Schools in Washington D.C. in the fall of 1958 (Bates was one of the main organizers of the March and Robinson was a speaker at the event). The cardboard broadside (11x17") displays water staining throughout, but most of the effects of the staining have been ameliorated by professional cleaning, leaving the broadside with an overall Excellent appearance.
