Displayed is a 1909 Frank Chance Chicago Cubs World Champion presentation cane. Hall of Famer Chance was a first baseman who played for 17 Major League seasons, 15 with the Chicago Cubs and two years with the New York Yankees. Chance was also a manager, and he managed the Chicago Cubs (1905-12), New York Yankees 1913-14), and the Boston Red Sox (1923). As a player-manager, Chance led the Cubs to NL pennants in 1906, '07. '08, and '10, and World Series titles in 1907-08. Chance hit .296 lifetime, and he earned far from being named in the famous baseball poem" Baseball's Sad Lexicon", by Franklin Pierce Adams, a poem whose refrain includes the last names of the Chicago Cubs double play combination of Joe Tinker (shortstop), Johnny Evers (second base) and Frank Chance (first base). The refrain reads, "These are the saddest of possible words:' Tinker to Evers to Chance.' " The wooden cane is approx. 36" in length. Overall, it is in good, preserved condition. It appears that a repair was made to the handle some years ago. It was acquired from a longtime, reputable antiques dealer from South Jersey some years ago.
