Presented is a 1938 beautiful Type I photo of the World Champion New York Yankees (with Lou Gehrig), by Cosmo-Sileo. The black and white photo measures 8x10". The 1938 Yankees were a powerhouse, and the photo includes six Hall of Fame players: Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Bill Dickey, Joe Gordon, Red Ruffing, and Lefty Gomez, plus HOF manager Joe McCarthy. In '38, the Yankees went 99-53-5 in the season and swept the Chicago Cubs in the World Series. Gehrig, "the Iron Horse," continued his consecutive game streak that would eventually reach a then-record 2,130 games. Gehrig, at 35 years old, hit .295, with 29 home runs and 114 RBIs. For his career, 2-time AL MVP Gehrig hit .340. with 493 homers. In 1938, DiMaggio hit .324, 32 homers and 140 RBIs; Dickey batted .313, with 27 homers and 115 RBIs; Gordon hit 2 home runs, with 97 RBIs; pitcher Red Ruffing was 21-7; pitcher Lefty Gomez was 18-12. Gehrig is pictured in the middle row, second from the right. 1938 was Gehrig's last full season in baseball. In 1939, Lou was struck down by amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). and he only played eight games, and he passed away in 1941. The photo presents beautifully, with no creasing.
