August "Garry" Herrmann both the President of the Cincinnati Reds (1920-27) and the President of the National Baseball Commission (1903-20). Displayed are an early 1900s August Herrmann pin-back and his personal business card as President of the Reds, with both items dating to the early 1900s. As President of the Reds, Herrmann was at the Reds' helm when Cincinnati defeated the Chicago White Sox, (infamously known as the Black Sox) in the 1919 World Series that was fixed in Cincinnati's favor by eight members of the White Sox. For the majority of his tenure as the Reds' President, Herrmann was simultaneously the President of the National Baseball Commission. Thus, Herrmann was the highest Major League Baseball organizational executive of that era. After the Black Sox scandal in the 1919 World Series, Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis was given the specially-created position as Baseball's first commissioner, and Herrmann had to relinquish his ruling position in favor of Landis as commissioner. The pin has a diameter of 1.25". It exhibits toning and some minor rust. The business card measures 1.75x3.25". Printed on the card is "Mr. August Herrmann PRESIDENT CINCINNATI BASE BALL CLUB." The business card has some toning and a rust mark from a paper clip. The Herrmann pin and business card combination makes a nice vintage baseball memento.
