Collection of ten uncut panels, each picturing two players, issued as supplements in the Boston Sunday Herald in 1909. Each of these ten scarce supplements features a sepia photo of a Boston Red Sox player, paired together with a sepia photo of a Boston Braves player, for a total of twenty players. There are two duplicate panels, therefore sixteen different players are represented here. A printed box along the base of each photo identifies the player, his position, and team affiliation, and lets readers know that they can learn more about the player on the "Sporting Page." In our inventory that follows, the Red Sox players are listed first.
1) Harry Hooper/Johnny Bates; 2) Eddie Cicotte/Tom Tuckey; 3-4) Harry Lord/Bill Sweeney (two examples); 5) Ambrose McConnell/Jack Coffey; 6-7) Chas. Chech/Art Mattern (two examples); 8) Pat Donohue/Harry Smith; 9) Heine Wagner/Bill Dahlen; and 10) Harry Gessler/Frank Bowerman.
These supplements (9.5x14") are printed on thin newspaper stock and are extremely susceptible to handling wear. As such, nearly all display small edge tears (most of which have been repaired on the reverse with clear tape) and/or corner chips. However, the central image areas are generally free of any significant defects (with the exception of Tuckey; two small holes, and Gessler; repaired tear) and have an overall Excellent appearance.
