Original glass plate negative picturing heavyweight boxing champion Jack Johnson standing over a fallen Stanley Ketchel during their celebrated bout in 1909. This is a famous image from one of Johnson's most memorable bouts. Ketchel was the middleweight champion at the time and a ferocious puncher, but it still seemed inconceivable that the smaller, lighter, Ketchel could actually hurt Johnson, let alone defeat him. Johnson dominated the early rounds, knocking Ketchel down more than once, and he appeared to be "carrying" him during the middle rounds. However, in the 12th round Ketchel surprised Johnson with a right cross that knocked him to the canvas. Johnson, angered and embarrassed by the knockdown, proceeded to hit Ketchel with a thunderous punch that floored him and rendered him unconscious for over ten minutes. According to ringside reports, the blow was so hard that some of Ketchel's teeth remained lodged in Johnson's glove. This image captures Johnson as he leans against the ropes and awaits the referee's count of ten. The negative (8.5x6.5") displays a moderate chip near the base of the left border and is otherwise in Excellent condition. Culled from the legendary Brown Brothers Photo Archives. (Please note: the positive image seen on our website is for illustrative purposes only and does not accompany the negative; only the negative is offered in this lot.)
