The fantastic play by the New York Giants' Willie Mays is known in baseball circles simply as "The Catch." Presented is an approximately 15.1x20" vivid black and white photograph of the great play that Mays made in the top of the eighth inning in Game 1 of the 1954 World Series. The score was 2-2 in the top of the eighth inning, and Larry Doby, who led off the inning for the Cleveland Indians, walked, and the next batter, Al Rosen, singled Doby to second. The Giants' starter, Sal Maglie, was replaced by left-handed reliever Don Liddle to pitch to the lefty hitting Vic Wertz. The Indians' first baseman ran the count to 2-1 and then hit a tremendous fly ball to deep center field. Mays turned his back and raced towards the steps near the Giants' clubhouse in center field. With his back to the infield, the famous "24" visible on the back of his jersey, Mays made a spectacular over the shoulder catch and then whirled and threw back to the infield to hold Doby, who tagged up, at third base. The ball was estimated to have been caught about 420 from home plate. When Liddle was replaced by righthander Marv Grissom after the Mays catch of the enormous belt, Liddle is supposed to have humorously remarked to pitching coach Freddie Fitzsimmons, "Well, I got my man." The Giants got out of the inning with a 2-2- tie and won the game 5-2 in ten innings and went on to sweep the Series. Willie signed the photo in the perfect spot: Just over the baseball as Mays is about to make the catch. The Say Hey Kid's signature is big and bold and written in blue ink from a marker. The signed photo makes a great display collectible for any collection. The signed photograph comes with a PSA LOA.
