Displayed is a Steve Renko game used 1980 Boston Red Sox jersey. The 6'5" Renko was the last three-sport letterman at the University of Kansas (1963-65) where Renko was a starter in baseball, football, and basketball. In baseball, he was a pitcher and outfielder, and in football Renko played quarterback in the same backfield as Gale Sayers. In the Major Leagues, Renko pitched for seven different teams: Montreal Expos (1969-'70), and then shorter tours with the Chicago Cubs, Chicago White Sox, Oakland Athletics, Boston Red Sox, California Angels, and Kansas City Royals. He was a 15-game winner in two seasons, and he finished with a career record of 134-146. In 1979, his initial season with the Red Sox, Renko was 11-9 with a 4.11 ERA. In that season, he was pitching against the Oakland Athletics in an away game and carried a no-hitter into the ninth inning. With one out, rookie Ricky Henderson hit a single to break up the no-hit bid. Renko pitched two other one-hitters in his career. In 1980, the year Renko wore the offered jersey, he was 9-9 with a 4.19 ERA as the Red Sox, managed by Don Zimmer (and briefly by Johnny Pesky) finished fourth in the American League East Division. The gray away Red Sox polyester jersey has "BOSTON" in black block letters sewn on the chest. The front has seven gray colored buttons. In the collar is a Wilson manufacturer's tag showing the size as "46" and giving washing instructions. On the lower front outside tail is a swatch reading "80," for the year. Sewn across the back, in black numerals, is "25," Renko's number. The jersey shows use. There are a few tiny stains in the collar and a few loose threads in the back near the numbers, but overall the jersey is in excellent condition.
