Presented is a 1972 Ted Williams Washington Senators/Texas Rangers game worn jersey from Williams' time as a manager. Hall of Fame outfielder Williams always said that someday he wanted to walk down a street and hear people point at him and say, 'There goes the greatest hitter who ever lived." Some people would say that Williams had achieved his goal. He was the last Major Leaguer to hit .400, as Williams hit .406 in 1941. He hit .344 lifetime, with six batting titles, two American League MVP Awards, two Triple Crowns, and 521 home runs. He accomplished all of that while serving twice in the U.S. Military as a pilot - in two wars - and missing five years of playing. Williams managed for four years, from 1969-72. In his first year as a manager, he took the Washington Senators, recently an expansion team, from a 65-96 record in 1968 to a 86-76 mark in '69, and Williams was named the Manager of the Year. Williams wore this jersey in 1971 with the Senators, and then again in spring training with the team when it became the Texas Rangers in 1972 - and the original "Senators" on the front was changed to 'Rangers." The gray flannel jersey has "Rangers" sewn on the chest in red letters with blue trim and a small white star in a circle (in homage to the law enforcement Texas Rangers). The collar has a Wilson manufacturer's tag with "48," for size. On the left outside tail is sewn "1971 - Set 2." The back has number "9" sewn on, in red with dark blue trim. The "9" on the back is all original as is the "1971 - Set 2" tagging. The jersey has custom short sleeves for Williams. This game worn jersey was worn by the immortal Ted Williams in spring training of his final year of full-time employment in a baseball uniform. Such an extremely scarce, Washington Senators/Texas Rangers Ted Williams game worn jersey will bring excitement to any sports collection.
