Displayed is a 1961 New York Yankees photo pennant that includes a color photo of the '60 American League Champion Yankees. That '60 Yankee team lost the World Series in seven games to the Pittsburgh Pirates. The '61 Yankees team went 109-53-1 in the regular season and defeated the Cincinnati Reds 4-1 in games in the World Series. The '61 team blasted 240 home runs. Roger Maris and Hall of Famer Mickey Mantle were chasing Babe Ruth's single-season home run record of 60, and Maris beat the Babe by hitting 61 homers and Mantle, slowed by a hip abscess, added 54. The three Yankee catchers actually hit more home runs than Maris as Hall of Famer Yogi Berra (22), Elston Howard (21) and Johnny Blanchard (21) combined for 64 round-trippers. Of course, they didn't hit all of the home runs while catching. The Yankees had great versatility as Berra played mostly left field, Howard played both the outfield and first base, and Blanchard played some outfield. Hall of Fame left-hander Whitey Ford went 25-4, righty starter Ralph Terry was 16-3, and left-handed reliever Luis Arroyo was 15-5. All of the aforementioned 1961 players are in the included photo of the 1960 team, as well as Hall of Fame manager Casey Stengel. The pennant is 29 inches long, and approx. 11.5" at the larger end. The very tip of the pennant, approx. 1/2", is missing. The color team photo rests in an image of Yankee Stadium and measures 4.75" x 6.6". There are a number of very small stains on the red portion of the pennant. Overall, the photo pennant is in very good condition, and it provides a great remembrance of the iconic 1961 Yankees.
