Game ball from the exhibition football game between the Cleveland Browns and College All Stars held at Soldier Field in Chicago on Friday night, August 17, 1951. This ball originates from the personal collection of Cleveland Browns Hall of Fame wide receiver Mac Speedie and has been consigned to this auction directly by a family member. It is one of twenty lots from the Mac Speedie Collection offered in this auction, all of which were just recently on public display at the National Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. The annual game matching the defending NFL champions against a team of college all stars began in 1934 and ran until 1976. The Browns entered the NFL in 1950 and by virtue of winning the league title, they made their first appearance in the annual exhibition game against the college all stars the following summer. In front of a then-record crowd of over 92,000 fans, the Browns dominated their younger opponents, winning in lopsided fashion by a score of 33-0. The game took place at night, therefore the ball used was a special white football produced specifically for NFL games played under the lights. The Wilson official NFL ball, which features the stamped facsimile signature of league president Bert Bell, is lettered All Star Game Cleveland Browns 33 College All Stars 0" in black paint. Above that, written in black marker, is the year "1951." The ball is moderately deflated and displays heavy wear, indicative of game use, including numerous scuffs and abrasions.
