Extremely early Roy Campanella handwritten and signed baseball questionnaire dating from his first season in organized baseball in 1946. The questionnaire, issued by the "American Baseball Bureau" requests standard information, such as name, date of birth, place of birth, height, weight, etc., however, it also asks several baseball related questions. Included are Ambition in Baseball? ("To catch for the Brooklyn Dodgers"); To Whom Do You Owe The Most In Your Baseball Career? ("Bizz Mackey catcher & Mgr of Baltimore. Gave me my start"); What Would You Consider Your Most Interesting Or Unusual Experience In Baseball? ("Hitting two home runs in one inning in winter league in Puerto Rico 1941 & hitting home runs in every park in Mexican league 1943"). Campanella has dutifully answered each question, including a beautiful "Roy Campanella" signature on the line that requests his name. The signature and text are boldly scripted in blue fountain pen and grade 9/10 overall. On the reverse of the questionnaire he has listed his most recent winter league team "Vages B.B.C. Caracas Venezuela, Winter League 1945-46." The date "May 17 1946" is stamped in the upper right corner.

Campanella was a member of the Nashua Dodgers at the time he filled out this form. Nashua was a Class B minor-league affiliate of the Dodgers and a member of the New England League. Both Campanella and Don Newcombe, another African American player, were sent to Nashua by the Dodgers because it was the only Dodgers minor league club other than Montreal (where Jackie Robinson was playing) that was willing to accept African American players. Campanella enjoyed a successful year at Nashua, batting .290 and driving in 96 runs, numbers which earned him the league MVP Award at season's end. This is one of the earliest Roy Campanella signed items we have ever offered and the fact that it features outstanding baseball content makes it especially appealing. The questionnaire (8.5x14") displays three horizontal folds and is in Excellent condition overall. Full LOA from PSA.
