Hall of Famer Hilton Smith was one of the greatest players in the history of the Negro leagues. He played 13 seasons of Negro Leagues' baseball, mostly for the Kansas City Monarchs of the Negro American League. Smith's official records show that in Negro League play he had a record of 70-39 on the mound and a .291 batting average. Smith pitched and played in the outfield or at first base. Of course, most of the games that Smith played for the Monarchs are not in the official records. In many exhibition games and barnstorming appearances, Smith would often be the pitcher who took over after Satchel Paige pitched the first three innings. Many times, Smith would pitch six innings in relief of Paige and then do the same thing for several days in a row. Paige was often advertised to throw three innings, and he was the big draw and many times Smith would pitch as well or better than Paige. Hilton Smith played countless games in the outfield and first base over his career, and he was a feared hitter. He was almost always in the Kansas City Monarchs line-up, whether pitching or in the field. Smith sometimes pitched against white Major Leaguers in exhibition games, and Hall of Hamer Buck O'Neil, also a star with the Kansas City Monarchs, said, "Musial and Mize said they'd never seen a curve ball like Hilton's curve ball." Buck O'Neil also said that "[F]rom 1940 -1946 Hilton Smith might have been the best pitcher in the world." Smith has signed and inscribed a 3x5" index card. His signature and the inscription are both in blue ink. Smith has written "Hilton Smith/pitcher/Kansas City Monarch". The script is large and neatly written. The autograph has been encapsulated and PSA/DNA Certified as AUTHENTIC.
