Displayed is an original poster touting the appearance of Nirvana in New York City, at Roseland, on July 23, 1993, as part of the New Music Seminar. Originally founded in 1917 in Philadelphia, Roseland transferred to New York City in 1919 to avoid Philadelphia Blue Laws. The original New York City Roseland moved from its 51st Street location to 52nd Street in 1956. Over the years, Roseland featured dancing and big bands, such as the Tommy Dorsey and Glenn Miller Orchestras. More recently, Roseland was a multi-purpose venue that could accommodate 3,200 standing patrons as well as another 300 in the balcony. This 1993 appearance featured Nirvana performing songs from their up-coming third studio album In Utero, a release that would top the album charts in both the U.S. and the United Kingdom. Two singles from the album would reach Number 1 on Billboard's Alternative Music chart: "Heart-Shaped Box" and "All Apologies." Jon Pareles, a music critic on the New York Times, wrote: "The band ... reminds both old fans and skeptics of why it blasted out of the club circuit to begin with. ...The music weaves and undulates, conveying not the muscular certainty of most hard rock, but a struggle to break free of despair." At the Roseland appearance, Nirvana was joined onstage by two other musicians at times during the concert. The poster includes band members: Kurt Cobain (guitar and lead vocals), Krist Novoselic (bass guitar), and Dave Grohl (drummer). After the suicide of Kurt Cobain in 1994, Nirvana disbanded. The band is in the Rock Hall of Fame. As for Roseland, the venue closed after a final concert by Lady Gaga on April 7, 2014. The poster represents the basic, no frills poster style in New York City at the time. It measures 14x22". The poster does have some tiny white spots where the ink did not take in its printing run. Overall, the poster is in excellent condition. It recalls Nirvana, at its peak.
