Displayed is a full ringside working press ticket to the Nov. 22, 1965, WBC Heavyweight Championship fight between champion Muhammad Ali and challenger Floyd Patterson at the Las Vegas, Nevada Convention Center. It was Ali's second WBC title defense after he had won the title from Sonny Liston. Ali went into the fight with an undefeated record of 21-0-0 and at a weight if 210 pounds. Patterson entered the bout with a 43-4-0 record and a weight of 196.75 pounds. Ali quickly took the initiative against Patterson and began pummeling him almost at will. Finally, in the 12th Round, referee Harry Krause stopped the fight, and Ali won by a TKO. Many experts criticized Ali for seemingly torturing Patterson. The great former heavyweight champion Joe Louis said, "He [Ali] could have knocked Patterson out whenever he wanted." A New York Times writer said that watching the fight was "like watching someone pulling the wings off butterflies." In rebuttal, Ali said that he knew Patterson was hurt, and he [Ali] didn't want to injure him more by knocking Patterson out. In 1972, Ali and Patterson met for a second time, with Ali again winning on a TKO. The ticket measures 2.5x6". Jack Doyle, a promoter of the fight, has signed and personalized the pass by writing, in ink, "To Joan C. Costello/From Jack Doyle." The ticket at one time was mounted on a piece of cardboard, but the cardboard has been removed. The press pass ticket has a bit of waviness to it, but also has a great appearance, and the ticket represents a key fight in the careers of both Ali and Patterson.
