$100 bill inscribed by Mickey Mantle in blue Sharpie (grading 9/10) to fellow Hall of Famer Reggie Jackson. PSA has encapsulated the bill and certified the signature and inscription as "Authentic." Of all the many Mickey Mantle signed items we have seen, this is one of the intriguing because of what Mantle has written: "Reggie - You Asshole - I gave up - Mickey Mantle." We know that the "Reggie" Mantle is addressing here is Reggie Jackson because of its back story. Our consignor ran a family-owned business for many years in Newport Beach, California, and Reggie Jackson was one of his regular clients. One day Reggie paid his bill in cash, which included the $100 bill offered here. At the time of payment, no one noticed the inscription on the bill, because it was within a large stack of bills. Later that night, as his father was going through the receipts and counting the cash, he noticed what Mantle had written. The family all agreed that the inscription was worth more than the bill itself, so they decided to hold on to it. A year or two later, they contacted Reggie to see if he wanted to purchase the bill back, but he declined. Unfortunately, Reggie didn't provide any information as to why Mantle signed the bill in such a manner or why it was a $100 bill and not some lower denomination. The obvious assumption is that Mantle lost a bet of some kind, but that is purely speculation. In some ways it's better that we don't know, because it just increases the bill's value as one of the best Mantle conversation pieces in the hobby (everyone who sees it has their own interpretation of what prompted the inscription). The bill displays a moderate vertical fold and is otherwise in Excellent condition.
