Offered are four encapsulated rare bookmarks (circa late 1960s-early 1970s), each one celebrating a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. 1) James Naismith, elected in 1959 as a contributor. This doctor, minister, and YMCA leader wanted a winter sport to keep athletes occupied between football and baseball seasons, so he used peach baskets and a volleyball to create the game of basketball. Who could be more deserving of the Basketball Hall of Fame than the man who invented the game? 2) John Wooden. Elected in 1959 as a college player. He was later elected as a college coach in 1973, after these bookmarks were produced. Wooden became the first person elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as both a player and a coach. This college All-American at Purdue led the Boilermakers to the National Championship in 1932. He later become the great coach of the UCLA Bruins, winning ten National Championships. 3) Ed Macauley, elected as a college player. "Easy Ed" made himself into a great player He was noted for explaining why he kept practicing so hard: "When you are not practicing, remember, someone somewhere is practicing, and when you meet him, he will win." At St. Louis University, the center was the AP Player of the Year in 1949. He was All-NBA 1950-54. 4) Arnold "Red" Auerbach, elected in 1968 as a coach. He began coaching the Boston Celtics in 1950 and led the team to nine straight Division Championships and eight straight NBA Championships. Each bookmark measures approx. 2.25x6.25". The bookmarks exhibit some darkening because of the passage of time, but each is in overall excellent condition. These scarce bookmarks include all-time vintage basketball titans.
