Presented is an official program and ticket stub to the 1966 NCAA Basketball Semi-Finals, at Cole Field House at the University of Maryland, College Park Maryland, played on March 18th - a game that led to the historic "Glory Road" NCAA Basketball Championship played at the same venue the next day, a game that changed basketball history. The semi-final games had Kentucky defeating Duke by 83-79, and Texas Western beating Utah 85-79. The significance of Texas Western's semi-final victory was that it enabled Texas Western to face Kentucky for the National Championship, and the underdog Texas Western Miners defeated the favored University of Kentucky by 72-65. Kentucky featured All-American guards Pat Riley and Louis Dampier and it was still an all-white team, coached by Adolph Rupp, and Texas Western was a racially mixed team, coached by Ted Haskins, that started five African American players. The Texas Western triumph was the first time a basketball team with an all-African American starting lineup had won the National Championship. Many commentators are convinced that the Texas Western victory opened the door for many more African American players to play college basketball. Fifty years after the game, a 2006 movie, Glory Road, portrayed a seminal event in basketball, and civil rights, history. The ticket stub measures approx. 2x4.25", and it is for a $7.00 reserved seat. On the left side of the ticket stub are some tiny holes from when the stub was stapled at some point. The ticket stub has been encapsulated and graded PSA FR 1.5. The program measures 8.5x11". It has staple holes on the front. It is unscored. There are a few smudges and some tiny stains. Despite some expected darkening, the program is in excellent condition.
