Displayed is a small lock of hair taken from Secretariat, the astounding "Big Red," the ninth winner of the American horse racing Triple Crown, who set and holds the fastest time in all three of the Triple Crown races. His victory in the Belmont Stakes, the final leg of the '73 Triple Crown, was one of the most amazing races in thoroughbred history, as Secretariat won by 31 lengths. When Secretariat won the Triple Crown in 1973, he was the first Triple Crown winner in 25 years. Secretariat was nominated to the National Museum and Hall of Fame of Racing in 1974. Big Red's breeding was exquisite. He was sired by Bold Ruler, and Secretariat's grandsire was Nasrullah. Big Red's dam was Somethingroyal, and his damsire was Princequillo. In an included copy of a signed, typed letter attesting to how the consignor obtained the lock of Secretariat's hair, the consignor, Michael Tanner, writes: "Horses have been a lifelong fascination.... The opportunity to write about them was a labor of love....But the chance to stand hand on nose with the supreme flat-racer I had ever wrote about seemed a pipe dream. That is until 3rd November 1988 at Claiborne Farm in Kentucky.... Handler Bobby Anderson was at his [Secretariat's] side.... I asked if it was okay to take pictures. 'Sure.' A request for some of Big Red's hair was met likewise." The page-and-a-half typed letter from the consignor includes many more details of his meeting with Secretariat. The lock of hair has a diameter of slightly over an inch. This lock comes from the same consignor who sold another lock of Secretariat's hair through Lelands Auctions in spring 2021. In 1973, as Secretariat was opening his lead in the immortal Belmont Stakes Triple Crown race, announcer Charles David Anderson intoned, "They're in the turn and Secretariat is blazing along. The first quarter of the mile was in 1:09 and four-fifths!.... Secretariat is widening now. He's moving like a tremendous machine." That "tremendous machine" quotation would become part of Secretariat's legacy. The offered lock of hair is a wonderful memento from one of horse racing's greatest thoroughbreds.
