Pete Rose was passionate about getting base hits, and in his 24-year playing career year, he wound up with of 4,256 of them, the most in baseball history. Presented is a ticket stub from the July 31, 1978, game at Atlanta's Fulton County Stadium, when, as a Cincinnati Red, Rose singled to give him a 44-game hitting streak, tying him with Wee Willie Keeler (in 1897) for the National League's consecutive-game hitting record, and leaving Rose only 12 games behind the all-time Major League mark of 56 games set by Joe DiMaggio. In the record tying game, the Reds defeated the Atlanta Braves 3-2. Rose tied Keeler when he singled to right field in the sixth inning off Joe Niekro on a pitch many have called a fastball, a pitch that was unusual from the Brave knuckleballer. "Actually'" explained Niekro. "It was a sinker that didn't sink." On the next day, June 1st, Rose's streak ended against Atlanta pitchers Larry McWilliams and Gene Garber. In Rose's final at bat in that game, in the ninth inning, he struck out against Garber, but Rose was critical for Garber not throwing more fastballs. "He was pitching like it was the seventh game of the World Series," said the Reds' "Charlie Hustle." Garber was not amused. "I had an idea," said the Atlanta reliever, "that Rose was hitting like it was the final game of the World Series." Rose remains tied with Keeler for the longest National League hitting streak. Although Rose has been banned from baseball resulting from allegations about his gambling on baseball, his playing career remains illustrious, and the tying of the 44-game hit streak record remains one of his most famous moments. This ticket stub has been encapsulated and graded PSA VG-EX, with a Pop ONLY ONE HIGHER, and it actually appears better than its grade.
