Presented is a horseshoe, transformed into an attractive sterling silver ashtray, worn by the legendary thoroughbred Seabiscuit in his 1938 race in the Santa Anita Handicap. Seabiscuit was an unexpected thoroughbred champion, a small horse who only won one quarter of his first 40 races. He then improved to become the top money winning racehorse of the late 1930s. Seabiscuit was foaled in Lexington, Kentucky, the son of Hard Tack and the grandson of the miraculous Man o' War. Only standing 15.2 hands high, Seabiscuit was a very popular horse in the Great Depression, as many Americans identified with him as a small horse competing against his larger opponents. The Santa Anita Handicap was an iconic race that offered a purse of $137,300 in 1938, an amazing sum at that time. In a photo finish, Seabiscuit had lost the 1937 Santa Anita Handicap by a nose. Once again, in the 1938 "The Big Cap," a nickname for the race, Seabiscuit once again lost by a nose in a photo finish to Stagehand. Seabiscuit was unable to run in the Santa Anita Handicap in 1939, but finally did win The Big One in his final race, in 1940. The ashtray is engraved "Joe E. Brown From Charles S. Howard." Joe E. Brown was a famous comic and movie star. He played the comically eccentric Osgood Fielding III in the movie Some Like It Hot, and he was a sports enthusiast who even did some radio and television broadcasting for the New York Yankees in 1953. His son, Joe L. Brown was the general manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates for over 20 years. Charles S. Howard was a wealthy businessman who owned Seabiscuit. On the back of the ashtray is stamped "Sterling." Also engraved on the shoe is "Santa Anita, Seabiscuit, Handicap 3-5-38." The bottom of the ashtray exhibits tarnishing and some spotting and discoloration. The middle area of the back appears to have suffered some melting on the surface from an unknown source of heat. The front of the ashtray also has some tarnishing and spotting. Overall, the ashtray makes a prized horseracing memento of the beloved horse of the people, Seabiscuit. It also has a connection to sportsman and famous actor Joe. E. Brown.
