Bruce Sutter is the only pitcher to have led the National League in saves five times. His key pitch was the split-fingered fastball. "I felt like a pioneer with the split finger fastball.... I was the first one to really use it pretty much 100% of the time," said Sutter. "I felt if I didn't have it, I wouldn't have been in the big leagues." Sutter's split finger pitch took him to a Cy Young Award, four Rolaids Relief Man Awards, six All-Star selections, and being a key part of the 1982 World Series winning St. Louis Cardinals. Sutter pitched 12 Major League seasons for three teams: Chicago (5 years), St. Louis, and Atlanta. When Sutter retired, he had a 2.83 ERA and 300 saves, at that point the most saves in MLB history.
