Finely detailed baseball print, titled "A Stolen Base?" published by "L. Prang & Co., Boston." The scene pictures an infielder as he tries to make a tag on a sliding baserunner attempting to steal second base. Given the position of both players we can see that it will be a close play, hence the question mark in the title. Although the players pictured here are generic in nature, the baserunner bears a strong resemblance to Boston star Mike "King" Kelly, who was noted for his baserunning exploits. As such, the scene may have been inspired by the famous song "Slide, Kelly, Slide," which was published in 1889. The artist's name, "Frank O. Small," appears in the lower left corner. Louis L. Prang was one of the premier lithographers of his time and is best known today as the “Father of the Christmas Card.” This is one of two well-known baseball prints published by Prang, both of which are considered classics. It is also the scarcer of the two. The print (22x15", visible dimensions, not including the title along the base) is in apparent Near Mint condition. Matted and framed to total dimensions of 31.5x24". Please note: the size and/or weight of this lot will necessitate an increased shipping charge.
