1958 Topps #433 Pancho Herrera. Graded NM 7 by PSA. This is an especially interesting card considering the fact that PSA has not labeled it "Error." As all collectors are aware, the Pancho Herrera error card, in which much of the "a" in his last name is missing, is not only rare, but among the most valuable cards in the 1958 Topps Baseball set. However, in all the Herrara error cards, the "a" is not totally missing, only a portion is faded out. The offered example has not been deemed an "error" card by PSA, but as anyone can plainly see, much of the "a" in his last name is missing. The explanation given by PSA as to why this particular card did not receive an "Error" designation is that there are degrees with regard to the amount of print missing in the "a," and this card fell just short of meeting its arbitrary threshold. Subjectivity is part of any grading process, but we still find it hard to accept PSA's assessment of this card, especially when compared to other PSA Herrera "Error" cards. As always, collectors are free to make up their own minds with respect to this card, but either way, it is certainly one of the most controversial examples we have ever offered.
