In 1955 Cleveland Indians rookie pitcher Herb Score took the league by storm, finishing the season with sixteen wins and a Major League leading 245 strikeouts, which shattered the rookie record of 227 strikeouts set by Hall of Famer Grover Alexander in 1911. Included among his many honors at season's end was being named The Sporting News American League Rookie of the Year. Offered here is the award presented by The Sporting News to Score in commemoration of his historic rookie season. Printed on parchment in grand calligraphic style, the certificate lists Score's many accomplishments that season, including his record (16-10), ERA (2.85), and record strikeout total (245). It has been signed in black fountain pen by the president of The Sporting News, J. G. Taylor Spink. Score was extremely humble when he accepted the award, stating to the press "I was surprised being chosen for The Sporting News rookie award. I thought of several others who were more deserving. I guess I got it because of my strikeout record.” The award (15.5x15.25" visible dimensions) displays moderate-to-heavy toning and is otherwise in apparent Excellent condition. Framed to total dimensions of 17.25x16.75".
