Presented is a Type I photo of Hall of Famer Joe DiMaggio and future teammate Frankie Crosetti taken in late February 1936 with the players on a crabbing boat just before they went to spring training with the New York Yankees. The verbiage on the back of the photo states, "Joe DiMaggio (left) and Frankie Crosetti [,] both being Italian-Americans born in San Francisco, it stands to reason they live in North Beach. And as crab fishing is one of North Beach's important industries, it stands to reason that the pair of Yankee baseballers devote their 'off-season' recreation to crab fishing." Actually, Joe DiMaggio was born in Martinez, California - near San Francisco - and the players are too well-dressed for actually crab fishing, but it's a nice photo of the Yankee Clipper just before his first season with the Yankees. Crosetti would soon start his fifth season with the Yankees, and he had a good year in 1936, the shortstop batting .288 and making the All-Star team. DiMaggio did even better. He hit .325 in his debut campaign, blasting 29 home runs and drive in 125 runs. He also made the All-Star team. DiMaggio and Crosetti helped the Yankees to the World Series title with a six-game win over the New York Giants. DiMaggio actually hated fishing because he hated the smell of fish, and he probably wasn't in love with crabbing boats either, because the DiMaggio family had fishermen and a restaurant at Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco, so the photo is well staged. It is a nice remembrance of a youthful Joe DiMaggio, well before his marvelous 56-game hitting streak in 1941 and his later marriage to Marilyn Monroe. It's a great photo of a smiling DiMaggio before he became an American icon.
