Presented is an original LeRoy Neiman drawing that appeared in the May 1956 issue of Playboy. The drawing shows a Femlin, a very popular Playboy symbol, sweeping off a welcome mat. Femlin is a term created by Neiman to refer to a mixture of a female and a gremlin. Neiman studied art as a young man, and when he was with the U.S. Army during World War II, he painted sets for Red Cross shows. After the war, he was working as a fashion illustrator at a department store in Chicago when he met Hugh Hefner, a writer for the store. When Hefner began Playboy, he asked Neiman to create cartoon illustrations for the publication. Every month for fifty years, Neiman contributed two drawings to Playboy. Neiman used ink and colored pencils on heavy artists' paper to create his drawings. The Femlin was always dressed in thigh high stockings, long black gloves, high heels, and nothing more. She was a humanized cartoon, with a playful naughtiness. And she was a lady - mostly. This drawing (approx. 8.75x12") is exceptional. On the verso is stamped "Orchard Street Art Gallery (NYC)". Inscribed "Playboy - M.P." on lower left. Neiman has signed the drawing, in flowing, large black script on the lower right corner. The Femlin often appeared on the cover of Playboy. Neiman became famous for his illustrations and paintings of athletes, musicians, and other celebrities, and the Femlin remains one his most renowned creations.
