Late 1970s race suit worn by Hall of Fame driver Mario
Andretti. The white suit, with red accent stripes, the red and blue features a large “John
Player Team Lotus/Goodyear” patch on the reverse, and a smaller “John Player
Team Lotus” patch on the front left pocket. Additional sponsor patches are
those of “Goodyear (large individual patch on reverse, smaller patch on front),
“Champion” (right sleeve), and “Worth” (left sleeve). Andretti’s full name is
chain-stitched in red on the left front pocket. The lettering on the white manufacturer’s
label has faded beyond legibility. The suit is original as issued, but the “John
Player Team Lotus/Goodyear” patch on the reverse is partially detached. Moderate-to-heavy
use is displayed throughout, including light staining. Andretti joined Team Lotus
in 1976 and helped in the development of the Lotus 77. Riding for John Player Team
Lotus from 1976 to 1978, Andretti won the Formula One World Championship in 1978
and finished sixth, and third, respectively, in 1976 and 1977. Few athletes in
any sport transcend their craft to attain celebrity status, but Mario Andretti did
that in the sport of auto racing over the span of several magnificent decades. In
a testament to his versatility, he remains the only driver to win the Daytona
500, Indianapolis 500, and Formula One World Championship, and as such his name
became synonymous with driving fast for an entire of generation of fans and
non-fans alike. This is an outstanding Andretti race suit dating from the
height of his illustrious career.
