Lefty Gomez H&B pro-model ("G100") bat dating from the 1950s. The bat, which measures 35 inches in length and weighs 30 ounces, is not cracked and displays light use. Gomez, who was one of the New York Yankees' mound aces during the 1930s, retired in 1943, so this bat obviously dates from his post-playing career. However, the model number and specifications match those on file at H&B for his active playing career. Gomez remained involved in baseball for almost his entire life. During the 1940s he served as both a minor league manager and roving coach for the Yankees. During the 1950s, Gomez was a top salesman for the Wilson Sporting Goods and served on the board of directors of the Babe Ruth League. In 1958 he took part in a three-month baseball tour of Latin America, where he conducted baseball clinics for young players eager to learn the game. He was also an annual participant in the Yankees Old Timers' Day events, which began in 1947. This bat most likely was used by Gomez during one of his youth clinics, or perhaps at an Old Timers' Day game. Game used bats for Major League pitchers are rare, especially Hall of Famers. We cannot recall having ever seen a Gomez game used bat dating from his Major League playing days, making this attractive example the next best alternative for any advanced Hall of Fame bat collector.
