Judge Emil F. Fuchs Memorial Award, in the form of a highly ornate silver tray, presented by the Boston Baseball Writers Association of America to former Boston Red Sox outfielder Hugh Duffy in 1972. The tray, which measures 30.25x20.25”, displays detailed floral patterns in relief along the perimeter, with equally ornate patterns engraved in the center. The engraved lettering in the center of the tray reads “Judge Emil F. Fuchs Memorial Award/Presented to/George E. ‘Duffy’ Lewis/For His Outstanding Baseball Career/As A Player/Boston Chapter Baseball Writers Association of America/January 27, 1972.”

The Judge Emil Fuchs Memorial Award, which is presented annually by the Boston Baseball Writers Association of America (BBWAA), is the chapter’s highest honor and goes to those individuals who have demonstrated long and meritorious service to baseball. The award was established in 1959 and former recipients include Hank Aaron, Marvin Miller, and Ernie Harwell. Hugh Duffy, who was eighty-three years old when he accepted this award in 1972, was a key member of the Red Sox’s 1912, 1915, and 1916 World Championship clubs. From 1910 to 1915 he teamed with Tris Speaker and Harry Hooper to form one of the greatest defensive outfields in baseball history. Following his playing career, Lewis became the traveling secretary for the Boston Braves, a position he held from 1936 through 1961. The tray displays a few light scratches and minor tarnishing. In Excellent condition overall.
