The 1964 NBA All-Star game was an exciting contest won by the East 111-107, but even more important than the final score in the game was the "initial score" in the simmering labor strife between the owners and the unrecognized players' union. The players wanted such things as a pension, schedule reform, and full-time trainers. This All-Star game was to be telecast coast-to-coast for the first time, and the nation's basketball fans were anticipating seeing such future Hall of Famers as Wilt Chamberlain, Jerry West, and Bill Russell play. The players threatened to boycott the game. Finally, just before the tip-off, NBA Commissioner James Kennedy entered the locker room and promised the players that if they played the game that he and the owners would soon sit down with the player reps and discuss the players' concerns. The players agreed to play, and soon the players had their union, and progress on other matters. As for the game, the Cincinnati Royals' Oscar Robertson led the East in scoring with 26 points, and Russell grabbed 21 rebounds. Bob Pettit and Chamberlain led the West with 19 points each and Wilt had 20 rebounds. The lighter is silver colored with a red band. Inscribed on the lighter is "NBA East West All Stars Jan. 14, 1964, Boston Garden". The lighter is a rare souvenir from an important game in NBA history.
