Original Type I photo of pitcher Carl Mays as a member of the New York Yankees, circa 1921. Mays is pictured, sans cap, as he strikes a windup pose on the sideline prior to a game. Three Brown Brothers credit stamps appear on the reverse, along with a few editorial notations, including Mays’ name, and a small white inventory label. One of the game’s top pitchers during the late teens and early 1920s, Mays will forever be remembered today for delivering the pitch that killed Ray Chapman in 1920. Chapman’s death remains the only on-field fatality in Major League history. The photo (5.75x8”) displays a small tear at the top border that has been repaired on the reverse with clear tape and a few light creases. In Very Good condition. Culled from the legendary Brown Brothers Photo Archive. PSA encapsulated as Type I Authentic.
