Vintage mounted photo picturing Hall of Fame pitcher Christy Mathewson as a member of the New York Giants. This is an extremely early rookie-era image of Mathewson. While his youthful visage clearly dates it to the early 1900s, the uniform style shown here was used by the Giants only during the two-year period 1900 to 1901, which corresponds to Mathewson’s first two seasons in the Majors. Mathewson only appeared in six games in 1900, but the following season he established himself as one of the team’s top hurlers, posting the first of an eventual 13 20-win seasons. This is an exceptional Mathewson photo and one of the earliest images we have seen of him as a member of the Giants. Two Brown Brothers credit stamps appear on the reverse, as does Mathewson’s name written in pencil and a few editorial markings. Mathewson’s image has been editorially outlined within a black, hand-drawn rectangular box and five tack holes are displayed along the exterior perimeter of that box. Aside from those condition anomalies, the photo (4.25x6.5”) is free of any other significant flaws and offers fine contrast. It has been affixed to a thick cardboard mount of near-equal dimensions. Though this is clearly a vintage photo, because it has been mounted, PSA will not accept it for evaluation, therefore, no guarantee can be made regarding a specific Type designation.
