Pittsburgh Steelers football helmet worn by safety Mike Wagner
during the early 1970s. The black Riddell helmet features the Steelers logo on
the right side and a single gold stripe running down the center. Wagner's
jersey number, "23" is affixed in white numerals to both the front and rear of
the helmet. Wagner's name, height and weight, college affiliation, and pro
affiliation (Mike Wagner 6' 1" 210# Western Illinois Pitts) are written in faded blue ink on the interior rubber
padding hanging in the center of the suspension straps. The helmet is complete
with all its interior padding and original chin strap. The mounting brackets
for the facemask are broken, but remnants remain attached to each of the four
exterior screws. The original facemask accompanies the helmet (not attached). Mike
Wagner’s 10-year career with the Steelers (1971-1980) coincided with one of
the greatest decades in franchise history. A two-time Pro Bowl selection and a First
Team All Pro in 1973, Wagner was a key member of the club’s vaunted “Steel
Curtain” defense that helped lead the club to four Super Bowl victories between
the years 1974 and 1979. Wagner retired after the 1980 season with 36
career interceptions, plus one each in Super Bowls IX and X. Wager is currently
one of 45 inductees into the Pittsburgh Steelers Hall of Honor. The
helmet displays heavy wear, including various nicks, scratches, and abrasions
to the exterior.
