We've heard of people described as standing head-and-shoulders above others - figuratively; presented here are two charming photos from when Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was a youngster growing up in New York City and named Lew Alcindor. In these photos, Lew stood head-and-shoulders above his peers - literally. 1) This B&W photo measures approximately 4.5x3". Handwritten on the back is "1953." Young Lew, born in 1947, was probably six. The students are all male, and all are sporting ties. A nun presides. At the back of the classroom, near the window, is Abdul-Jabbar as a youngster, standing a true head-and-shoulders taller than any classmate. 2) In this 6.5x4.5", B&W photo, young Lewis is standing on a line of male youngsters, casually dressed, and waiting - maybe for a bus excursion. Again, the young Lewis stands head-and-shoulders above his mates. On the back is handwritten "1956." But Kareem was more than merely very tall. He was a smart student and an outstanding athlete who grew to 7'2" and dominated the NBA. A center, he averaged 24.6 points and 11.2 rebounds in 20 seasons - with the Milwaukee Bucks, and then the Los Angeles Lakers. Abdul-Jabbar won six NBA championships, six MVPs, and wound up in the Basketball Hall of Fame. Here's a unique way to see the NBA's all-time scorer (38,337 pts.) "way back when."
